US 101: Pistol River Bridge Repair

Location

Gold Beach, OR

Project Category

Cathodic Protection, Bridge Rehabilitation

Description

Ocean windsurfing is so good here that it has become the location for several national championships. However, fifty years of exposure to the salt laden air of the rugged Pacific Ocean had taken its toll on the Pistol River Bridge rendering it seriously deficient. Conway undertook this major bridge renovation and Cathodic Protection project in order the extend the service life of this vital link to the Southern Oregon Coast. Cathodic Repairs included removal and replacement of 1,100 square yards of damaged concrete, repair of over 700 damaged reinforcing bars, elimination of discontinuous reinforcing bars, removal of near surface metals, installation of zinc annode coating, and DC power distribution and remote monitor system wiring. In addition, Conway replaced the bridge bearings, replaced 1,100 feet of concrete bridge rail, installed seismic restraints and installed a silica fume overlay. Further, Conway redesigned the Agency’s traffic control plan, setting a model for future projects and saving Oregon tax payers over $300,000. The project was significant as it was one of the first non-historic bridges in Oregon to receive cathodic protection and repairs in lieu of replacement.
